Expanded Apple Store to open in Christiana Mall on Friday

Apple will open an expanded Christiana Mall store on Friday at 6 a.m.

The store reportedly  has 10,000 square feet of space, including an expanded Genius Bar that provides technical support and diagnoses common hardware and software problems.

The retailer has been popular with shoppers, due, in part to the lack of a sales tax in the state. That attracts busloads of shoppers.

The “Black Friday” coincides with the one day of the year when Apple marks down prices of its computers and iPads.

Apple has been operating from temporary space in an area of the mall with an outside entrance while the location underwent the renovation and expansion.

Apple was joined earlier in the fall when Microsoft opened a retail store in the mall that features the company’s Xbox, Surface tablet computer, smartphones and other equipment using its software.

Apple also has an authorized store at the Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore on Main Street in Newark. Sales of  Apple computers, iPhones and iPads are limited to students and staff.

Apple has nearly 400 stores worldwide, with the Christiana Mall location  being one of the first 100 to open. The store has been expanded twice since opening in 2004.
